Flap Wheel Sander

Woodworkers and craftsmen can use a Flap Wheel sander to create a smooth finish on various materials. A sander accomplishes this by means of abrasive material like sandpaper. Although sanders used in auto body repair are powered by compressed air, the sanders for woodworking are powered by electricity.

Various types of sanders are available in order to serve different purposes. A selection of sander attachments is also available for multipurpose power tools and electric drills.

A Flap Wheel Sander is among many types of woodworking sanders. Other examples of the woodworking type of sander are the belt sander, detail sander, disc sander, drum sander, oscillating spindle sander, random orbital sander, straight-line sander, stroke sander, and wide-belt sander.

Sanding Flap Wheels are sanding attachments that are shaped like a Rolodex. On a handheld drill or mounted on a bench grinder, these attachments are used in a flap wheel sander to finish curved surfaces. The flap wheel heads are flexible so they can conform to the shape of whatever is being sanded.

The use of a flap wheel sander cuts down the working time that a woodworker or craftsman has to spend since they do not have to make machine alterations or change the head settings to accommodate a variety of product profiles. These sanders are recommended for sanding raw wood as well as sanders or primers.

When sanding raw wood, flap wheel heads are used for removal of small fibers, which can dry up and set if they are not removed. Trying to remove the fibers using chemicals, water, or another device is not feasible because the fibers just pop out. If the fibers dry up, they also cause rough sealer coating, which will add to the sanding time necessary. You would find it difficult to get a smooth topcoat, and more sanding time will be needed between coats.

A flap wheel sander head can produce consistent pore openings on raw wood, resulting in a uniform color on the surface of the finished product. Flap Wheel Sanders soften the sharp edges of wood somewhat, allowing improved adhesion of sealers to the corners of the wood and making sealer or primer sanding a much easier and faster task.

When a flap wheel sander is used for sanding raw wood, the wheel heads ensure the complete and uniform abrasion necessary for the primer coating. The right amount of abrasion allows superior bonding of the seal coat to the topcoat. Properly sanding raw wood ensures that sanding the sealer or primer coat will not burn through or white-line the product and gives it an overall higher quality finish.
